METROLINK ALL SET FOR ANCOATS
Ancoats is set to benefit from the new 9.6km Ashton-under-Lyne Metrolink extension.
The Metrolink will soon run from the existing Manchester Piccadilly terminals up to Ancoats, Eastlands, Clayton, Droylsden and Audenshaw, serving regeneration areas at Ancoats, New Islington, Urban Village, the Commonwealth Games site and Ashton Moss. The line will run along Ashton New Road directly serving a significant proportion of local residents.
Ancoats will be the first stop from Piccadilly with journey times of only a couple of minutes, the new line is expected to carry six million passengers a year saving an estimated two million car journeys.
The Metrolink link extension is expected to add value to the area of Ancoats and is being seen as a vital part of the regeneration of East Manchester and Tameside. Popular developments such as Albion Works, Vulcan Mill and Islington Wharf will benefit immensely.
Ancoats' £2 billion city regeneration programme aims to integrate hotels, shops, health and leisure centres, residential developments, a host of new canalside restaurants and bars, plus upgraded road access and extensions to the motorway. All have been masterplanned to create a vibrant new community fit for the 21st Century, with a population due to double to over 60,000, with 12,500 new homes and the creation of 15,000 new jobs during the 10 years.
